- Illinois Tourism Alliance New Identity Wins Two Awards!
Our new ITA logo won the Judge’s Choice Award and its new stationery package won an "Addy" at the recent Northern Illinois Advertising Federation 2007 Addys. Congratulations to GrahamSpencer who developed the creative concept and to David Preece, President and CEO of the Rockford Area CVB who led our Marketing Communications Task Force!

Illinois Tourism Fast Facts
Tourism is one of the key drivers of the Illinois economy.
- Total state taxes generated by traveler expenditures in 2005 were $1.2 billion.
- Of this amount, $172,412,566 was Illinois’ hotel-motel tax revenue. The state’s tourism budget is funded solely by a portion of these tax receipts.
- In 2005, tourism contributed $26.2 billion to the Illinois economy in direct expenditures on transportation, lodging, food, entertainment, recreation and incidentals.
- Tourism means jobs - over 300,000 in Illinois are employed directly by tourism and many thousands more indirectly.
- On average, an Illinois visitor spends $113 per person per day.
Visitor numbers for Illinois are strong, but there is room for growth.
- In 2005, Illinois welcomed 90.78 million domestic visitors, 31% for business and 69%for leisure purposes, as well as more than 1.5 million international visitors.
- Illinois ranks 9th in the U.S in its share of total domestic travel and 5th in total traveler spending.
- In 2005, the top five states providing visitors to Illinois were: Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Missouri and Michigan.
- The top markets for international visitors to Illinois were: Canada, United Kingdom, Mexico, Germany and Japan.
- Illinois is the 6th most popular state and Chicago the 9th most popular city for overseas visitors to the U.S.
Illinois tourism makes a big difference at the local level.
- In 2005, over $600 million in local tax revenues were generated by Illinois tourism.
- Transportation (45.6%), food service (23.1%) and lodging (17.3%) make up a significant portion of direct travel expenditures, followed by general retail trade (7.6%) and entertainment and recreation (6.4%) .
- Approximately 50% of the state tourism office budget is returned to local tourism organizations or communities through grants.
